Rowan Pierce: Abigail, it's wonderful to have you with us today. We're talking about a unit that seems to be generating a lot of buzz among our computing students - Information Technology and IT Ethics. Why does this particular topic matter so much in today's digital landscape?
Abigail Frost: Thanks for having me, Rowan. You know, it's fascinating because we're living in a time where technology is advancing at breakneck speed, but our ethical frameworks aren't always keeping pace. This unit matters because every single one of our graduates will face ethical dilemmas in their careers, whether they're developing AI systems, managing data, or designing user interfaces.
Rowan Pierce: That makes perfect sense. Could you walk us through what you consider the three core ideas that students really need to grasp in this unit?
Abigail Frost: Absolutely. The first core idea is data privacy and protection. We're not just talking about GDPR compliance here, though that's part of it. It's about understanding that when people entrust us with their personal information, we have a moral obligation to protect it. The second is algorithmic bias - how the data we feed into systems can perpetuate or even amplify existing societal inequalities. And third, digital accessibility - ensuring that the technologies we create are inclusive and available to everyone, regardless of ability or circumstance.
Rowan Pierce: Those are such crucial points. I'm particularly interested in algorithmic bias. Could you give us a real-world example that really brings this concept to life?
Abigail Frost: There's a memorable case from a few years back involving a major tech company's hiring algorithm. The system was trained on historical hiring data, which unfortunately reflected human biases. The algorithm learned to downgrade resumes that included words like "women's" - as in "women's chess club captain" - and it also penalized graduates from women's colleges. It's a perfect example of how technology doesn't create bias out of thin air, but can amplify existing societal prejudices if we're not careful.
Rowan Pierce: That's quite eye-opening. So how do we prepare our students to spot and prevent these kinds of issues in their future careers?
Abigail Frost: Great question. We teach them to always ask the right questions. Who might be excluded by this technology? What assumptions are we making in our design? Where did our training data come from? It's about developing an ethical mindset, not just technical skills. We also emphasize the importance of diverse teams - different perspectives help catch potential biases that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Rowan Pierce: Let's talk about the practical side. What's one key takeaway that students can apply immediately, even while they're still studying?
Abigail Frost: I'd say it's the habit of conducting regular ethical impact assessments. Before starting any project, take five minutes to ask: What are the potential ethical implications here? Who might be affected by this technology? What could go wrong? It's a simple practice, but it builds the muscle of ethical thinking. And it's something they can start doing right away, whether they're working on a class project or an internship.
Rowan Pierce: That's such practical advice. How does this unit connect to the broader computing curriculum? Why is it positioned where it is?
Abigail Frost: We deliberately place this unit after students have gained some technical foundation. It's much more powerful to discuss ethics when students have enough context to understand the real-world implications. They've written code, they've worked with databases, they've seen how systems are built. Now we're asking them to step back and consider the broader impact of their work. It's about creating responsible technologists, not just skilled programmers.
Rowan Pierce: I love that - responsible technologists. That really captures it. Looking ahead, how do you see the importance of IT ethics evolving in the coming years?
Abigail Frost: It's only going to become more critical. As AI systems become more sophisticated and integrated into every aspect of our lives, the ethical stakes get higher. We're already seeing governments around the world developing new regulations around AI ethics. Companies are hiring chief ethics officers. This isn't just a nice-to-have anymore - it's becoming a core business requirement. Our graduates who can navigate these complex ethical landscapes will be incredibly valuable.
Rowan Pierce: That's a powerful point to end on. Before we wrap up, any final thoughts for our students who are about to embark on this unit?
Abigail Frost: I'd say approach this with curiosity and an open mind. The most interesting ethical dilemmas don't have easy answers, and that's okay. The goal isn't to memorize rules, but to develop your own ethical compass. And remember, every great technologist I know cares deeply about the impact of their work. This unit is your opportunity to build that foundation.
